The bargain is only useful if you can move it
You have found a sofa, dining table or sideboard online. Before agreeing the collection, work out how it will travel from the seller’s room to your home. A furniture listing rarely contains every measurement or access detail you need.
A hired enclosed trailer may be an option if your vehicle is suitable and the load fits. Start with the item, then confirm the trailer, rather than assuming the trailer will accommodate whatever you buy.
Ask the seller for useful measurements
Request the full length, width and height, including feet, handles and any fixed projections. Ask whether legs or sections can be removed and whether the item comes apart safely. A photograph beside a door can help explain the shape, but it is not a substitute for measurements.
For a sofa, the deepest or tallest part may be the difficult dimension. For a cabinet, ask about loose shelves and glass. For a table, confirm whether the top and legs can travel separately and who will dismantle them.
Check both ends of the journey
Ask which floor the item is on, whether there are stairs and how far it is from a safe loading point. Confirm whether the seller can help or whether you need to bring another person. Decide the route through your own home too; a piece that travels successfully may still be awkward at your front door.
For a Preston-area collection, send us any restrictions affecting where you can park or turn the trailer. Tight access needs planning, even when the trip itself is short.
Agree the hire before fixing the collection slot
Send your preferred dates and item measurements with the trailer enquiry. We need to confirm the actual trailer’s space, opening, payload and suitability for your towing vehicle. Wait for the hire arrangements to be agreed before promising the seller a specific time.
Leave enough time to inspect the item, dismantle it if necessary, load and secure it, drive home and return the trailer. A short drive does not always mean a quick collection.
Bring a small collection kit
Plan appropriate restraints and padding for the item, plus tools if dismantling has been agreed. Keep removable fittings together. Protect vulnerable corners, glass and upholstery, and prevent individual sections moving against each other.
Follow the trailer instructions and official guidance for safe loading and securing. Do not use the trailer walls as a reason to leave an item loose.
