Can my car tow a hire trailer? Check the weights first

Find your car’s towing limits, understand MAM and train weight, and prepare a realistic load list before enquiring about trailer hire in Preston.

Start with your exact car and the job you have planned

A towbar is a starting point, but it does not tell you whether a particular trailer and load suit your car. Before arranging a furniture collection or house move around Preston, gather the vehicle limits and a realistic load list. This guide explains what to look for so the enquiry can move beyond “it has a towbar”.

Use the handbook and manufacturer information for your exact vehicle variant, including its engine and transmission. A figure for a similarly named model is not enough. If the documents disagree or you cannot identify the limits, ask the vehicle manufacturer to clarify before arranging the hire.

Separate the limits from what things actually weigh

GOV.UK’s weight definitions distinguish a permitted maximum from an empty vehicle’s weight. Keep these terms separate in your notes:

  • Maximum authorised mass (MAM): the permitted maximum loaded weight of a vehicle or trailer. It is also called gross vehicle weight (GVW). A trailer’s MAM includes the trailer itself; it is not the amount of furniture you can put inside.
  • Actual loaded weight: what the vehicle or trailer weighs with the load it is carrying on this journey. An empty outward trip and a loaded return trip need different consideration.
  • Gross train weight (GTW): the limit for the loaded car and trailer together.
  • Payload: the weight available for the load, after allowing for the trailer itself and equipment. Confirm the usable allowance for the actual hire unit.

The government’s towing guidance says the car’s towing limit is usually in its handbook or specification sheet. Its train-weight limit may appear on the VIN plate. It also says not to use the vehicle for towing if that plate does not list a train weight.

Write down the car’s limits together

Find the permitted towing weight for the type of trailer involved: braked and unbraked limits are different figures. Then record the car’s maximum loaded weight, its train-weight limit and both axle limits. The DVSA safety-check page includes an example plate showing the car, combination, front-axle and rear-axle limits.

Passengers, fuel and luggage count towards vehicle weight. Allow for the people helping with the collection and anything travelling in the boot. Meeting one limit does not cancel the others: the towing limit, car weight, train weight and axle limits all need checking. Do not turn a single subtraction from a plate into a blanket approval for the combination.

Build a load list before estimating the trailer weight

List each item and its weight, using a manufacturer specification or a reliable measurement where available. Include the boxes, packing materials and loose equipment travelling in the trailer. Record where each figure came from and mark unknown weights clearly rather than quietly treating them as zero.

Ask us to confirm the actual trailer’s plated limits, empty weight as equipped, usable payload and loading instructions. The name “Debon 500” alone does not establish those details for your hire.

Illustrative example only: suppose a trailer has a 2,000 kg permitted maximum and an empty weight of 650 kg. The difference is 1,350 kg. If 40 kg of loose equipment is added and was not included in that empty weight, it leaves 1,310 kg for other contents under the trailer’s overall limit. These invented figures are not specifications for our Debon and do not establish what your car can tow. Vehicle, axle and equipment limits may reduce what is possible.

For a load containing several heavy items, get dependable weights before deciding how many can travel together. A trailer with empty floor space can still be too heavy. If the weights remain uncertain, resolve how they will be established before loading and travelling.

Check the towbar, noseweight and loading instructions

Noseweight is the downward load at the coupling. Check the vehicle’s permitted nose load and the ratings and instructions for the towbar and trailer coupling. NTTA’s towbar guidance calls for suitable vehicle towing capacity and nose load; its journey checklist also covers the towbar and coupling limits.

Follow the actual equipment instructions for load position and measurement. Do not assume a generic percentage or a level-looking trailer proves the setup is right. Overall weight checks do not replace correct distribution, secure restraints, working connections, tyres and lights.

Keep the licence check separate

Check your own driving record against current GOV.UK towing entitlement guidance, which distinguishes when you obtained your licence. This guide is for planning hire in Great Britain; check the applicable rules directly for other licence circumstances. Licence entitlement does not increase a car’s towing capacity. Send a useful enquiry

  • Your preferred collection and return dates.
  • Vehicle make, exact model/variant, year, engine and transmission.
  • The towing and vehicle limits you have found, plus any uncertainty.
  • Items, dimensions and weights, including packing and equipment.
  • Passengers or significant luggage accompanying the load.
  • Access restrictions and equipment questions.

Use our first-hire checklist for the wider handover preparations. If your vehicle is unsuitable, our trailer-versus-van guide helps you compare another option. Once the combination is suitable, plan the timing with our Preston journey checklist.

Send your vehicle and load details → We confirm suitability, availability and the full quote individually. An enquiry does not reserve a trailer.
