Planning a trailer journey from Preston: roads, access and return time

Plan your Preston trailer hire around roadworks, loading access and all four journey legs, with official Lancashire travel links and a practical return-time checklist.

Plan four journeys, not just the collection

A furniture collection can look like a short round trip on a map. With trailer hire, there are usually four legs to arrange: collecting the trailer, reaching the seller, taking the item home and returning the trailer. Loading, unloading and the handover sit between those journeys.

For a job starting in Preston, use the checklist below before agreeing a collection slot. It helps you build a realistic hire window and spot access problems while there is still time to change the plan. For the item measurements and packing itself, use our furniture collection guide.

1. Check local roads and motorway works separately

Start with Lancashire County Council’s roadworks page. It links to the Lancashire roadworks bulletin and temporary traffic regulation orders. Check the roads approaching the collection address and your destination, rather than looking only at the longest part of the journey.

If your route uses the M6, M55, M61 or M65, also check National Highways’ travel updates. Its service separates current incidents from planned full closures. Save the relevant links with your collection details and check again before setting off; an earlier route check cannot guarantee a clear road later.

Read the direction, affected junctions and start and finish times of any closure. A restriction on the other carriageway may matter on the way back. The daily closures report lists closures by their start date, so an early-morning journey may be affected by work listed under the previous evening. Check both dates where necessary.

2. Ask about the last few metres

A postcode gets you near an address; it does not establish where a car and trailer can load. Ask the seller or site contact for the actual entrance, a suitable stopping place and the space available to turn. A rear loading entrance may be on a different street from the front door.

  • Which entrance should the towing vehicle use?
  • Are there gates, height barriers, narrow approaches or restrictions to check?
  • Where can the complete combination stop legally without blocking access?
  • Can it leave forwards, or will reversing be needed?
  • How far must the item be carried from the building?

Check the same details at your own destination. Tell us about tight access when enquiring. Do not assume that a suggested sat-nav shortcut or a place you can park the car alone will suit the trailer too. If access cannot be confirmed, resolve it before committing to the job.

3. Allow for towing rules when estimating time

For a car towing a trailer, the national limits are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Lower posted or variable limits still apply. These are maximum limits, not target speeds: conditions may require less. Check the GOV.UK speed-limit table for your vehicle type.

Highway Code rules 97 and 98 also cover allowing for breaks and delays, longer stopping distances when towing, and the prohibition on using the right-hand lane of a motorway with three or more lanes when towing. A normal car journey estimate is therefore only a starting point for your schedule.

4. Work backwards from the agreed return time

Write down the trailer return time first, then allow for the drive back after unloading. Before that, allow time to unload at home, travel from the seller, inspect and load the item, reach the seller and complete the trailer handover. Add a realistic margin for delays instead of filling every available minute.

Confirm that helpers are available for both loading and unloading. If the seller has a narrow collection window, share it in your enquiry before agreeing hire times. A second load creates another loading cycle and more travel; it is not just the extra distance shown on the map.

If plans change, stop somewhere safe before contacting the relevant people. Agree any revised hire arrangements directly. Do not assume that a late return or a longer hire is automatically available.

Keep one set of journey notes

  • Confirmed trailer collection and return arrangements.
  • Seller and destination entrances, access notes and contact details.
  • Roadworks checks for the outward and return dates and directions.
  • Time for handover, loading, unloading, breaks and delays.
  • Who is helping, and when they need to be available.

For a Debon 500 enquiry, send your preferred dates and times, load dimensions and weight, towing vehicle and any access restrictions. We will confirm suitability, availability and a full quote individually. An enquiry does not reserve the trailer. Our first-hire checklist covers the equipment and collection preparations.
