Collecting a washing machine: a plan before you lift

Collecting a washing machine around Preston? Check the model, transport preparation, access, loading equipment and unloading plan before agreeing a time.

Ask whether it is ready to move

A washing machine advertised for collection may still be connected under a kitchen worktop. Before agreeing a time, establish who will prepare it, how it will leave the property and who will unload it at your end. A short journey across Preston does not make those jobs disappear.

This guide is for planning the collection of an appliance you intend to use. It is not a disconnection or installation manual. Keep the instructions for the exact model with your collection notes, and arrange professional help where needed.

1. Get the model number before choosing transport

Ask for the full model number and a photograph of the appliance. Find its manufacturer’s manual and record the external dimensions and appliance weight. The laundry capacity printed on the front is not the weight of the machine itself.

Check whether it is freestanding or integrated, and whether it is still installed. Ask about any furniture panel, hoses or separate accessories included in the sale. Include those in your load list rather than discovering extra pieces at the door.

Measure the route into its new position as well as the machine. Allow for the handling equipment and people using the route. A kitchen opening that suits the appliance once installed may be a very different problem during the move.

2. Resolve transit bolts and preparation in advance

Check the model’s transport instructions for transit bolts or other transport locks. Ask whether the correct parts are available and who will fit them as instructed. If parts are missing, obtain manufacturer advice before fixing the collection date; do not assume a short trip removes the requirement.

Bosch’s moving guidance covers disconnecting the appliance, draining excess water from hoses and using transit bolts to secure the drum for transport. It recommends keeping the machine upright when loaded. Use your own model’s instructions to settle the preparation and orientation needed.

Agree that preparation will be finished before the collection slot. Do not arrive expecting an unfamiliar seller’s plumbing, power connection or fitted kitchen to be dealt with in a few spare minutes. If either party is unsure, arrange a suitable professional.

3. Plan the route from kitchen to trailer

Ask for the floor level, any steps, narrow turns and the distance to a suitable loading position. Photographs of the route can help explain an awkward corner. Confirm the same details at home, including where the machine can wait if installation is later.

Choose handling equipment and help for the actual machine and route. HSE’s workplace manual-handling guidance prioritises avoiding hazardous handling and considering suitable mechanical aids. It is a useful planning principle, rather than a promise that a trolley or a second person makes every lift safe.

Ask a professional mover if the weight, stairs or access are beyond the equipment and experience available. Do not improvise a ramp or rely on the seller being able to lift. Trailer hire does not supply a moving crew.

4. Agree the loading and securing arrangements

Send the appliance dimensions, weight, required travel position and any handling equipment with your enquiry. We need to confirm the actual trailer’s opening, usable space, permitted load and suitability for your towing vehicle. A machine fitting through a door does not establish that the whole arrangement is suitable.

Plan protection and restraints before collection. The appliance’s transport locks and the restraints securing it in the trailer have different jobs; one does not replace the other. Confirm suitable restraint equipment and fixing points for the proposed load, following the appliance and trailer instructions. Do not assume blankets, a trolley or securing equipment are included.

The DVSA checklist includes load security, distribution and weight limits, as well as the trailer’s connections, tyres and lights. Complete the checks before travelling. An enclosed body does not make an unsecured appliance ready for the road.

5. Leave time for unloading and installation

Book the help needed at the destination before setting off. The person available at the seller’s house may not be available at home. Allow time to unload before returning the trailer; our Preston journey-planning guide covers the separate collection and return legs.

For installation, follow the exact appliance manual. Bosch’s installation guidance includes removing transit bolts, levelling and checking the connections for leaks, with professional help if unsure. Do not run the machine with transport locks that the manufacturer says must be removed.

A message to send the seller

“Please send the full model number, dimensions and appliance weight. Is it freestanding or integrated, and will it be disconnected and prepared for transport before collection? Are the correct transit parts available? Which floor is it on, are there steps or tight turns, and where can we load? Please confirm what accessories are included and whether any lifting help has actually been agreed.”

Once those answers are clear, send your preferred dates, load details, towing vehicle and access notes in a washing-machine collection enquiry. We will confirm suitability, availability and a full quote individually. An enquiry does not reserve the trailer. For the wider collection arrangements, use our first-hire checklist.
