Moving day: plan the last load before handing back the keys

A final-load planner for moving day: coordinate cleaning, leftover belongings, unloading help, key handover and the agreed trailer return.

The final load needs a plan of its own

The sofa and beds may be at the new house while the vacuum, cleaning kit, tools and a cupboard full of odds and ends are still at the old one. That last trip can clash with the cleaner arriving, a key handover or the trailer return time.

This guide is for the final stage of a move around Preston: deciding what stays until the end, who takes it away and how it fits around the appointments you have agreed. Use our main house-move guide for the earlier inventory and furniture preparations.

Put four separate times in the diary

  • Furniture out: when the remaining bulky items must leave the old property.
  • Cleaning access: when cleaning can start and which rooms need to be clear.
  • Property handover: the time, place and person agreed for returning keys.
  • Trailer return: the agreed return appointment after unloading.

Confirm these arrangements with the people involved. Do not assume a cleaner needs an empty house, can work around boxes or will move furniture: ask about the actual job. A key handover and a trailer return are different appointments, and may require journeys in opposite directions.

For a Preston-area move, put the old address, new address, key-return point and agreed trailer-return location into the plan. Check the journeys between them using our local route-planning guide. A short distance does not account for unloading or waiting for access.

Make a “stays until the end” list

Walk through the old property before the main furniture trip. List what you still need there and give every item a destination and a person responsible for it. Include things outside the main rooms: shed contents, a doormat, tools left beside dismantled furniture and anything in a porch or cupboard.

Keep the list specific. “Cleaning things” can mean a vacuum, mop, bucket and several containers, rather than one small bag. Plan how liquids will travel securely in their original closed containers, following their labels, and keep them away from belongings they could damage.

Separate items that must remain at the property from your own things. Confirm any uncertain item with the relevant person before moving it. Put keys and essential paperwork somewhere accessible throughout the move.

Give the final kit a place to travel

Decide which remaining items will go in the car and which need the trailer. Allow for passengers and the things they are already bringing. Do not leave an unexplained “we will squeeze it in” at the end of the plan.

If cleaning finishes after the trailer must be returned, arrange another suitable way to move the cleaning kit before committing to those times. The answer may be a different order for the day or a longer agreed hire period; it is not permission to keep hired equipment beyond the agreed return.

Keep the final load within the actual vehicle and trailer limits and secure it properly, even if it is smaller than the earlier loads. The DVSA checklist covers load distribution, security, connections, tyres and lights for each towing journey. Recheck the arrangement after unloading or changing the load.

Keep unloading help until the job is finished

Confirm who will be at the new property for the last arrival, and how access will work. A helper who finishes at lunchtime may not be there for the final cabinet or appliance. Make any handling-equipment arrangements for both ends, rather than relying on what happened to be available earlier.

Where lifting is difficult, resolve the method and suitable help before the day. HSE’s workplace guidance prioritises avoiding hazardous handling and considering appropriate mechanical aids. Do not turn a late return appointment into a reason to attempt an unsuitable lift.

  • Remaining items and destination: ______
  • Items staying at the old property: ______
  • Cleaning starts / expected finish, confirmed with: ______
  • Who removes the final kit, using which vehicle: ______
  • Last unloading help and destination access: ______
  • Key handover time, place and contact: ______
  • Trailer return time and travel allowance: ______
  • What we will change if an appointment moves: ______

Before the final departure, check the list room by room. Resolve anything left without a transport plan before handing over access. Once unloaded, check the trailer for your belongings and follow the agreed return and condition-check arrangements.
